The history of zoos
Zoos attract millions of visitors every year, but their purpose has changed greatly over time. The earliest collections of wild animals were very different from modern zoos.
Thousands of years ago, rulers in several ancient civilizations kept unusual animals such as lions, elephants and exotic birds. These collections were usually private and were created to show wealth and power rather than to educate the public.
During later centuries, wealthy European families also kept collections of rare animals. Some animals were gifts from foreign rulers or were brought back by travellers. Ordinary people usually had little opportunity to see them.
Public zoos began appearing in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At first, many animals lived in small cages because visitors wanted to see them clearly. People knew much less about animal behaviour and welfare than they do today.
During the twentieth century, attitudes gradually changed. Zoo designers began creating larger spaces that looked more like natural habitats. Instead of simple cages, animals were given areas with plants, rocks, water and places to hide.
Modern zoos often have several purposes. They educate visitors about wildlife, support scientific research and take part in conservation programmes. Some zoos breed endangered animals and may later help return them to protected areas in the wild.
However, zoos are still debated. Supporters believe that good zoos can help protect endangered species and teach people about nature. Critics argue that wild animals should not be kept in captivity. As a result, modern zoos are under increasing pressure to provide high standards of animal care.
A. Ancient rulers kept wild animals mainly to…
1) teach children about nature.
2) show their wealth and power.
3) return them to the wild.
4) study their behaviour.
B. In later centuries, rare animals in Europe…
1) were sometimes gifts from foreign rulers.
2) were kept only by farmers.
3) could be seen by everyone for free.
4) were all born in Europe.
C. Early public zoos often kept animals…
1) in large forests.
2) in protected national parks.
3) in relatively small cages.
4) inside visitors’ homes.
D. During the twentieth century, zoos…
1) started creating more natural environments for animals.
2) stopped keeping endangered species.
3) became private again.
4) removed plants and water from animal areas.
E. Choose the TRUE sentence.
1) Modern zoos are never involved in conservation.
2) Everyone agrees that keeping animals in zoos is good.
3) Some zoos help breed endangered animals.
4) Modern zoos exist only for entertainment.

Ticket clerk: Hello. Can I help you?
Boy: Yes, please. I need a ticket to Oxford.
Ticket clerk: When are you travelling?
Boy: I wanted to go on Saturday afternoon, but my cousin has planned something for us after lunch. So I need to arrive in the morning instead.

Boy: Is there much difference in price?
Ticket clerk: Yes. The 9:10 train costs £25, the 9:40 is £19 and the 10:10 is £23.
Boy: Then I’ll take the 9:40 train.
Ticket clerk: Is that a single ticket?
Boy: No, a return, please. I’ll stay at my cousin’s house on Saturday night.
Ticket clerk: On Sunday, you can return at 11:30 in the morning, 4:15 in the afternoon or 8:05 in the evening.
Boy: I don’t want to get home too late. The afternoon train sounds best.

Возможный вариант ответа:
Hello Daniel,
Thank you for your email. I enjoy travelling because every trip gives me a chance to see something new. My most memorable journey was to Kazan with my parents last spring. We visited the Kremlin, walked around the city centre and tried local food. When I travel, I usually take my phone, headphones, a bottle of water and a small notebook. I also carry a power bank in case my phone battery gets low.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Alex
