How suspension bridges developed

Bridges have allowed people to cross rivers and valleys for thousands of years. The earliest bridges were probably simple tree trunks or flat stones placed over narrow streams. As towns grew and trade increased, people needed longer and stronger bridges.

One important type is the suspension bridge. Its roadway hangs from large cables that are supported by tall towers. The cables carry the weight of the bridge and transfer it to strong structures built into the ground on both sides.

Early suspension bridges were made from ropes or chains. They were often used in mountainous regions, where building stone supports in deep valleys was difficult. These bridges could cross large distances, but they moved greatly in strong winds and could not carry very heavy loads.

During the nineteenth century, engineers began using iron and later steel cables. These materials were much stronger than ordinary ropes. They made it possible to build wider bridges that could carry carts, trains and increasing amounts of road traffic.

Building a suspension bridge requires careful planning. Engineers must study the ground, measure the strength of the wind and calculate the weight of the roadway, cables and vehicles. If one part of the structure is too weak, the entire bridge may be unsafe.

Wind has caused serious problems for some bridges. In 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the United States began moving strongly during a storm and finally collapsed. No people were killed, but the accident taught engineers important lessons about the effect of wind on long bridges.

Modern suspension bridges use computer models and wind-tunnel tests before construction begins. Sensors may also be placed on finished bridges to measure movement, temperature and stress. This information helps engineers discover problems early and organise repairs.

Suspension bridges can cross distances that would be difficult for many other bridge designs. However, they are expensive to build and require regular inspection. Their tall towers and long cables have also made many of them famous landmarks.

A. The roadway of a suspension bridge…

1) rests directly on the bottom of a river.
2) hangs from large cables.
3) is always made from wood.
4) is supported only by boats.

B. Early rope suspension bridges…

1) could carry modern trains.
2) remained completely still in strong winds.
3) were built mainly across city streets.
4) were useful in deep mountain valleys.

C. Iron and steel cables allowed engineers to…

1) build bridges that carried heavier loads.
2) stop using towers and supports.
3) avoid calculating the weight of bridges.
4) make bridges entirely from rope.

D. The collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge…

1) happened because of heavy snow.
2) caused the deaths of many passengers.
3) showed how seriously wind could affect a bridge.
4) ended the construction of suspension bridges.

E. Which sentence is TRUE?

1) Modern bridges are never inspected after construction.
2) Sensors can help engineers identify problems early.
3) Suspension bridges are always inexpensive to build.
4) Computer models have replaced all physical tests.

Emma: Hi George. Have you seen the advertisement for the engineering exhibition at the city museum?

George: Yes, I read about it yesterday. Are you planning to go?

Emma: Yes, on Sunday afternoon. Would you like to come with me?

George: Certainly. Is the main display about factory robots?

Emma: There is a small section about robots, but the main display explains how engineers design bridges, tunnels and other large structures.

George: That sounds interesting. Where shall we meet?

Emma: We could meet outside the exhibition hall.

George: It may be crowded there. There is a reception desk just inside the building. Let’s meet near it.

Emma: Good idea. The guided presentation begins at three o’clock. Shall we meet at half past two?

George: I need to return some books to the library first. Could we meet fifteen minutes later?

Emma: Of course. A quarter to three is fine.

George: I planned to travel by bicycle, but the weather forecast says it may be windy. I’ll take the tram instead.

Emma: That sounds safer. See you on Sunday!

George: See you!

A — 2: was completed. Past Simple Passive.

B — 3: enough.

C — 4: stronger. Слово than требует сравнительной степени прилагательного: stronger than.

D — 2: are inspected. Present Simple Passive.

E — 1: has visited. Present Perfect.

Hello Emma,

Thank you for your email. I enjoy technology projects because they help me solve practical problems and work creatively with other students. Last term, my group designed a small device that warned us when a classroom plant needed water. I prepared the instructions, tested the sensor and explained our results to the class at school. In the future, I would like to study solar technology and build a model charger for mobile phones.

Write back soon.

Best wishes,
Alex
