Restoring the old lighthouse
The old lighthouse at the entrance to our harbour had not been used for more than thirty years. Modern electronic systems now guided ships safely towards the port, and the building had gradually fallen into poor condition. Some people believed that repairing it would cost too much and that it should simply be removed.
Our Geography teacher suggested studying the lighthouse as part of a project about the history of the harbour. At first, I expected to find very little information. However, the local archive contained maps, engineers’ drawings and the diaries of several lighthouse keepers.
We discovered that the lighthouse had been completed in 1887. Before it was built, ships sometimes had difficulty finding the harbour entrance during storms or thick fog. Its powerful lamp and warning bell made the route much safer, especially during winter.
One diary described the life of a keeper named Arthur Bell, who lived there with his family. He had to clean the lamp, check the machinery and record weather conditions every day. During one severe storm, he remained awake all night because the lamp repeatedly stopped working.
When our class first visited the building, we found broken windows, damaged stairs and water on the floor. Nevertheless, most of the stone walls were still strong. An engineer explained that the lighthouse could be restored, but the roof and wooden staircase required urgent repairs.
Students organised an exhibition about the lighthouse and presented copies of maps, photographs and diary entries. The exhibition attracted many visitors, including former harbour workers who shared additional stories. A local newspaper published an article, and several businesses offered money or building materials.
During the first stage of the restoration, workers repaired the roof and installed a safer staircase. They also removed rubbish and treated the walls to prevent further water damage. The original lamp could not be used to guide ships, but specialists managed to repair it for display.
The lighthouse reopened last summer as a small museum. Visitors can climb to the viewing platform, examine the old lamp and listen to recordings of former harbour workers. The project showed me that historical buildings are valuable not only because of their appearance but also because of the stories connected with them.
