How national parks developed

For centuries, people used forests, mountains and rivers mainly as sources of food, wood and other materials. As cities and industries grew, some natural areas began to disappear. During the nineteenth century, scientists, artists and travellers started arguing that particularly beautiful landscapes should be protected.

The idea of creating large protected areas developed strongly in the United States. Yellowstone, established in 1872, is generally considered the world’s first national park. Its mountains, forests, waterfalls and unusual hot springs attracted visitors, but the main purpose of the park was to protect the area from private development.

At first, managing such a large park was difficult. There were few roads, almost no trained park workers and no clear system for protecting wildlife. Hunters continued to kill animals inside the park, while some visitors damaged natural features or left rubbish behind.

Later, special park services were created. Rangers watched over protected areas, helped visitors, prevented illegal hunting and fought forest fires. Roads and walking paths were built so that tourists could explore parks without causing unnecessary damage.

The national park idea gradually spread to other countries. However, different nations developed their own rules. Some parks were created mainly to protect rare animals and plants, while others also aimed to preserve historical buildings, traditional lifestyles or important cultural sites.

National parks can bring economic benefits to nearby towns because visitors need accommodation, food and transport. At the same time, large numbers of tourists can create problems. Cars cause pollution, popular paths become damaged and wild animals may change their behaviour when people approach them too closely.

Modern park managers try to balance tourism and conservation. They may limit the number of visitors in sensitive areas, close paths during certain seasons or provide public transport instead of allowing private cars. The goal is to let people enjoy nature without destroying the places they have come to see.

A. During the nineteenth century, some people began to believe that…

1) all forests should be used for industry.
2) cities should be built inside natural areas.
3) important landscapes needed protection.
4) tourists should avoid mountains and rivers.

B. Yellowstone was created mainly to…

1) protect the area from private development.
2) provide land for new factories.
3) make hunting easier.
4) build a large railway station.

C. One early problem at Yellowstone was that…

1) too many trained rangers worked there.
2) visitors were not allowed to enter the park.
3) all wild animals had disappeared.
4) people continued hunting inside the protected area.

D. National parks may benefit nearby towns because…

1) visitors spend money on local services.
2) all tourists move permanently to the area.
3) parks provide free houses for residents.
4) factories are usually built inside them.

E. Which sentence is TRUE?

1) Modern park managers encourage unlimited car traffic.
2) Every national park protects only plants and animals.
3) Tourism can both help and harm areas around national parks.
4) Closing paths always increases environmental damage.

Amelia: Hi Harry. Have you seen the advertisement for the environmental exhibition at the natural history museum?

Harry: Yes, I read about it online. Are you planning to go?

Amelia: Yes, on Sunday afternoon. Would you like to come with me?

Harry: Certainly. Is the main exhibition about renewable energy?

Amelia: There is a small section about solar and wind power, but most of the exhibition explains how household waste is sorted and recycled.

Harry: That sounds useful. Where shall we meet?

Amelia: We could meet outside the main entrance.

Harry: It may be busy there. There are several ticket machines inside the museum. Let’s meet beside them.

Amelia: Good idea. The guided tour begins at one o’clock. Shall we meet at half past twelve?

Harry: I need to return a library book first. Could we meet fifteen minutes later?

Amelia: Of course. A quarter to one is fine.

Harry: I planned to cycle there, but the weather forecast says it may rain. I’ll take the bus instead.

Amelia: Good idea. See you on Sunday!

Harry: See you!

Задание 4

Возможный вариант ответа:

Hello Ethan,

Thank you for your email. I enjoy taking part in environmental projects because they show how our daily choices affect nature. Last term, my group studied the amount of plastic used in our school cafeteria. We counted bottles and containers and suggested several ways to reduce waste. In the future, I would like to investigate how urban parks improve air quality and provide homes for birds and insects. This topic seems useful for our town.

Write back soon.

Best wishes,
Alex
