Our river clean-up project

Last spring, our Geography teacher told us that a local environmental organisation needed volunteers to clean a riverbank near our town. Plastic bottles, food packaging and other rubbish had collected there during the winter. Our teacher suggested that the class should join the project.

At first, some students were not enthusiastic. They thought the work would be unpleasant and believed that one afternoon would not make a real difference. However, the organisation showed us photographs of birds and fish that had been harmed by plastic waste. After seeing them, most of the class agreed to take part.

Before the event, we received safety instructions. We were told to wear strong shoes and gloves and not to touch broken glass or unknown objects. The organisers also divided the riverbank into sections so that each group would know where to work.

My group was responsible for an area close to a small bridge. During the first hour, we collected several bags of plastic bottles and drink cans. We also found an old bicycle wheel and part of a broken chair. Larger objects were marked and later removed by adult volunteers.

While we were working, a biologist explained how rubbish affected the river. Plastic could remain in the environment for many years, and small pieces might be eaten by fish or birds. Chemicals from some waste could also enter the water and damage plants.

After lunch, we separated the collected rubbish into different containers. Glass, metal and suitable plastic were sent for recycling, while other materials had to be disposed of safely. By the end of the afternoon, the riverbank looked much cleaner.

The project did not end there. Our class prepared posters asking people not to leave rubbish near the river. We also presented the results at a school meeting and suggested placing more waste containers in the area.

A month later, the environmental organisation sent us new photographs. The riverbank was still clean, and several families were using the area for walks and picnics. I realised that a small project could lead to useful changes when people worked together.

Welcome to the Forest View Nature Centre. It is situated in Oak Street, close to the large forest park. The centre will reopen next Thursday after a short period of repair work.

There are birdwatching, environmental art and forest research classes for teenagers. Birdwatching classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students learn to identify local birds and sometimes observe them in the park.

Environmental art lessons are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students use natural and recycled materials to create pictures and models. Every month, they can enter an environmental art competition.

Forest research activities take place on Saturday mornings. Students measure trees, study insects and record changes in the local environment.

The centre also has an information room with computers, maps and reference books. On weekdays, it is open from nine in the morning until eight in the evening. At weekends, it closes at six.

Please remember that the information room is closed during July while the computers are being replaced. All classes and outdoor activities will continue as usual.

лексико-грамматическое оформление — до 3 баллов;
орфография и пунктуация — до 2 баллов.

Если объём письма составляет менее 81 слова, ответ оценивается в 0 баллов по всем критериям. Если объём превышает 121 слово, проверяются только первые 110 слов.

Максимальный первичный балл за всю работу — 25.
