My first school newspaper

When our English teacher suggested creating a school newspaper, I was not enthusiastic. I thought newspapers were old-fashioned and that most students preferred short online messages. However, my friend Mia immediately volunteered to become an editor and persuaded me to join the team.

At our first meeting, twelve students came to the library. Some wanted to write articles, while others preferred photography or design. I chose to write about school events because I already knew many members of the sports and music clubs.

My first task was to interview the captain of the basketball team. I prepared ten questions, but during the interview I became nervous and forgot two of them. Fortunately, the captain was friendly and gave detailed answers. He also showed me several photographs from recent matches.

Writing the article was more difficult than I had expected. My first version was too long and contained several unnecessary details. Mia helped me shorten it and explained how to organise the information more clearly. After that, I rewrote the text twice.

Other students prepared reports about a science competition, a charity concert and improvements to the school cafeteria. The design team created colourful headings and selected the best photographs. We decided to publish the newspaper both on paper and on the school website.

Two days before publication, we discovered a problem. One article contained the wrong date for the charity concert. We corrected it just before the final version was sent to the printer. This taught us that every fact had to be checked carefully.

The first issue appeared at the end of the month. More students read it than we had expected, and several teachers asked for extra copies. Some readers even sent us ideas for future articles. I am now working on an interview with a local artist who will visit our school next week.

Welcome to the Green River Youth Centre. It is situated in Bridge Street, close to the river park. The centre will reopen next Tuesday after a short summer break.

There are drama, creative writing and digital photography classes for teenagers. Drama classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students prepare short plays and perform them for their families twice a year.

Creative writing lessons are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Every month, students can enter a short-story competition. The winning story is published on the centre’s website.

Digital photography classes take place on Saturday mornings. The centre provides cameras, so students do not need to bring their own equipment.

Система оценивания

В заданиях 1 и 2 за каждый правильно выбранный ответ начисляется 1 балл. В задании 3 по 1 баллу начисляется за каждое правильно преобразованное слово. Максимальный результат за каждое из заданий 1–3 — 5 баллов.

Электронное письмо оценивается по четырём критериям:

решение коммуникативной задачи — до 3 баллов;
организация текста — до 2 баллов;
лексико-грамматическое оформление — до 3 баллов;
орфография и пунктуация — до 2 баллов.

Если объём письма составляет менее 81 слова, ответ оценивается в 0 баллов по всем критериям. Если объём превышает 121 слово, проверяются только первые 110 слов.

Максимальный первичный балл за всю работу — 25.
