6. Mikhail Lomonosov
Mikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 into a wealthy family in the northern
coastal village of Denisovka not far from Archangelsk. From an early age, he loved
going out to sea with his father. These voyages influenced the young Lomonosov’s
ideas about the beauty of nature and sharpened his character.
He came on foot to Moscow where he entered the Slavic-Greek-Latin
Academy. Lomonosov’s life there was very difficult and poor. However, thanks to
his persistence he managed to complete the entire 12-year course of study in
5 years.
Thanks to his outstanding academic success, Lomonosov was able to leave
to study with the best professors in Europe. It was there that he took up the natural
sciences for real. But for such a passionate researcher, it was not enough to study
natural sciences only in the classroom, and he also took part in various field works.
Lomonosov’s contributions to such sciences as physics, chemistry,
geography, astronomy, mineralogy, soil science, geology, cartography, geodesy,
and meteorology are very great. Lomonosov’s literary output contains works in
various languages.
Lomonosov’s works contain many discoveries ahead of his time. For
example, he is known to have designed a blueprint of an aircraft, something like
