Our first invention fair

Last autumn, our technology teacher announced that the school would organise its first invention fair. Students had to work in small teams and create a device that solved an everyday problem. The invention did not have to be complicated, but it had to work during the final presentation.

My friends Leo, Hannah and I decided to build a system that reminded people to water their plants. Hannah suggested using a sensor that could measure how wet the soil was. When the soil became too dry, a small light would turn on.

At first, the idea seemed simple. However, we soon discovered that connecting the sensor to the light was more difficult than expected. Our first circuit did not work at all. Leo thought the sensor was broken, but Hannah noticed that two wires had been connected incorrectly.

After correcting the circuit, the light turned on, but it stayed on even when the soil was wet. We changed the program several times and tested the device with different types of soil. We recorded every result in a table so that we could compare the tests.

Our teacher did not solve the problems for us. Instead, she asked questions that helped us think about possible causes. She also reminded us to make the device safe and to organise the wires neatly before the fair.

On the day of the event, twenty-four teams presented their inventions in the school hall. Some students had designed automatic feeders for pets, while others had created alarms, phone holders and machines made from recycled materials.

During our presentation, the sensor worked correctly. The judges liked the practical idea and the clear way we explained our experiments. We did not receive first prize, but we won a special award for careful testing.

I had hoped to win the main prize, so I was slightly disappointed at first. Later, I realised that creating and improving the device had taught me much more than simply receiving a prize. Our team has already started discussing an invention for next year’s fair.

Welcome to the Future Technology Centre. It is situated in Station Road, close to the railway museum. The centre will reopen next Wednesday after several weeks of repair work.

There are robotics, computer programming and model-design classes for teenagers. Robotics classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students build simple machines and learn how sensors and motors work.

Computer programming lessons are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students create simple games and useful applications. Every month, they can enter a programming competition. The winner receives a tablet computer.

Model-design classes take place on Saturday afternoons. Students make models of vehicles, buildings and machines from wood, cardboard and recycled materials.

The centre also has a large computer laboratory. On weekdays, it is open from nine in the morning until eight in the evening. At weekends, it closes at six.

Please remember that the computer laboratory is closed during August because new computers are being installed. All classes will continue as usual.

Электронное письмо оценивается по четырём критериям:

решение коммуникативной задачи — до 3 баллов;
организация текста — до 2 баллов;
лексико-грамматическое оформление — до 3 баллов;
орфография и пунктуация — до 2 баллов.

Если объём письма составляет менее 81 слова, ответ оценивается в 0 баллов по всем критериям. Если объём превышает 121 слово, проверяются только первые 110 слов.

Максимальный первичный балл за всю работу — 25.
